Terry Deacon B Sc Eng, B Eng (Hons) CPM, PMP.
Terry Deacon is the founder and CEO of ProjectPro®.
Background Terry Deacon is an internationally certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) with the Project Management Institute. He is also a registered Project Management Assessor with the Services SETA He graduated as a civil engineer from University of Cape Town in 1972 and spent the first 10 years of his career working as a consulting civil engineer for Ninham Shand Inc. and Hill Kaplan Scott Inc. He was involved in the planning, design and implementation of multi -disciplinary projects like township developments, roadworks, pipelines, pump stations, sewerage works, dredging and marine works. Project management He joined Van Wyk & Louw (now Africon) in 1983 to specialise in project management and studied part-time for an Honours Degree in Construction Project Management at University of Pretoria, graduating in 1986. A year later he was in the first group of South Africans to write the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exams and became one of only 137 internationally recognised PMPs in 1987. The PMP® is administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) in South Africa, of which Terry has been an active member since 1985. He served on the Executive Committee as Vice President Projects and Public Relations from 1986 to 1989. Thereafter, BKS Inc employed Terry for seven years where he was heavily involved in practising and developing project management as a distinct discipline. ProjectPro® In 1991 Terry realised he could make an even greater contribution to project management in South Africa and started ProjectPro® Magazine which, through his hard work and dedication, has become highly respected and successful in the project-driven industry, nationally and internationally. ProjectPro® magazine has won many awards for excellence from the Specialist Press Association. Five major organisations distributed ProjectPro® Magazine to their members: Project Management Institute South Africa, Association of South African Quantity Surveyors, South African Institute of Building, the Cost Engineering Association of Southern Africa, and the Association of Construction Project Management. As from May 2001 the ProjectPro® printed magazine was converted to an electronic format available on website www.projectpro.co.za . In 1993 Terry founded ProjectPro Management Services in response to a need for project management training and consulting. In 1995 he developed a series of three structured and integrated courses based on the internationally recognised Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) approach. These courses foster career development with the ultimate goal to obtain the PMP® certification. Terry has personally trained thousands of delegates from novice to advanced level. The latest addition to the stable of courses offered is a one-day personal efficiency and effectiveness course called Seize the Day! At the cutting edge By virtue of the fact that he is managing editor of ProjectPro® E-zine, Terry has to stay at the cutting edge of developments in project management. He is therefore in close contact with project management bodies and roleplayers around the world such as PMI®, IPMA, APM, AIPM, etc. He regularly attends overseas symposiums, interviews experts, reviews software and books, stays abreast of NQF requirements, PM competencies and best practices. As such he can be a very valuable asset to anyone interested in following a career in project management or those interested in implementing project management in their organisation.
